The ancien regime was a form of government used prior to the French Revolution and was govern by absolute monarchs, used Divine Right as a basis for ruling and the rulers were often labeled as despots.1 Louis XVI was influenced by Louis XIV, but lacked the drive and determination to elapse the reign of the Sun King.
