My Lai

The awful events that took place on March 16th 1968 in South Vietnam are agreed to be one of the flog wartime controversies of all time. On that date, U.S. soldiers registered the hamlets of My Lai and My Khe of the Son My village because intelligence conscious them that a Viet Cong battalion had taken refuge there. They were ordered to enter the village and confront the retreating Viet Cong. As the situation during the invasion escalated, innocuous villagers including women and children were executed with no regard for mercy. Some of the innocent girls were sexually assaulted and to the highest degree of the village was burnt to the ground. This incident in most eyes is heinous and unacceptable, and they are not wrong for persuasion this way. However, before one passes judgment on these men, several flock need to be considered.
The officers leading the soldiers into the village gave orders something to the effect that any man found there will have a weapon, any women will have a pack, any cows is VC [Viet Cong] food, and to destroy it. This is according to Dennis Conti, a member of Lieutenant William Calleys platoon on the day of the incident. Lieutenant Calley is the man who issued that order and the only when man convicted after the investigations.



Dennis Contis testimony alludes to the fact that he was, in a sense, tricked into thinking there would be hard resistance where they were headed. He could not speak for his fellow soldiers further if one soldier received that impression, then it is not ill-judged to assume many others did as well. Captain Eugene Kotouc testified that he was assumption orders to burn and destroy the village. Captain Kotoucs testimony states, he cherished the area cleaned out, he insufficiencyed it neutralized, and he wanted the buildings knocked down. He wanted the hootches burned, and he wanted the tunnels filled in
